Past: Akimichi Chouji is the youngest son of Akimichi Chouza, an internationally renowned ‘culinary artist’. His upbringing was good, even though he was raised by a single parent---the Akimichi men had strong values, and though Chouza traveled prolifically all through Chouji’s childhood, he and his father stayed quite close. Chouichi, his brother and a KHS all-star football alumnus, has always been distant, as if embarrassed of Chouji’s mediocrity. In all honesty, Chouji is embarrassed of his own mediocrity. Cooking and playing the drums are the only things that he thinks he can do right.

Present: Having weathered what amounted to be the worst winter of his life, Chouji comes to Shodai Academy as a much quieter, much angrier boy than many of his friends remember him being. He’s every bit the compulsively eating giant of their childhood, but he’s a lot less likely to put on his happy face and interact with others. Those who knew him well---Yamanaka Ino and Nara Shikamaru, both of which have had very little contact with Chouji over their high school career---can gather from his changed attitude what they will. He will not talk about what has changed him, for good or for ill.

School: Chouji is a transfer student from Konoha High School, and this will be his first term at Shodai. He’s nervous to be seeing many of his childhood friends again, and doubly anxious to be out of the mainstream of Konoha. He didn’t get into Shodai because of his grades---he barely passes most classes, though he works very hard in his schoolwork. As noted by many teachers, Chouji is just a little slow on the uptake. He wishes to turn over a new leaf this school year---to leave behind everything that’s kept him from his previous friendships, and to try to gather himself well enough to move on and excel in his schoolwork. He can usually be found with his headphones firmly in place and his music blaring, in his usual spot on the dock, in the mess hall, or in the basement with his beloved drums.
